Chapter 22: Sunday Morning
The church was full on Sunday.
Word had gone around the sixty-one, and then around their cousins, and by ten o'clock people stood along the back wall.
We took the third pew on the left.
Daniel sat on my right with June on his knee, and Rory sat on his right, in the brown tie.
Kate sat on my left. Ben and his husband had the pew in front, and a lemon cake in a box on the floor between their feet.
Judith sat alone in the front row.
The pastor said the opening prayer and a hymn was sung, and I did not hear a word of either.
Then he stepped aside from the pulpit.
"Judith Ferris has asked to say a few words," he said. "I've told her the floor is hers."
She stood.
She wore the cream cardigan. She walked up the aisle with a sheet of paper in her hand and put it on the lectern.
She looked at it, and then she pushed it aside and looked out at the room instead.
"I chaired the hospitality committee for eleven years," she said. "You all know me. You've eaten my casseroles."
A few people shifted.
"Two months ago I told sixty people that my daughter-in-law had been unfaithful to my son."
The room went completely quiet.
"I sent it at three in the morning because I thought nobody would answer, and I was afraid they would. It was false. I knew when I sent it that it was false."
Ben's husband took Ben's hand.
"Her name is Lydia Quinn. She is the best thing that ever happened to my son, and I told this church she was unstable, and that she had been unfaithful, and that she should not be trusted with her own baby."
Her voice held. Her fingers were white on the wood.
