Chapter 14: The Circulating Nurse

Ansel's POV

I took the knife back from the second surgeon without a word.

He stepped aside, and I looked down at the boy.

The drape was over his head, as it always is, and for years I have let it stay there.

I reached up and folded it back myself.

He had a gap where a front tooth had been, and a scrape on his chin from the bus window.

I looked at him for as long as it took to know his face.

Then I went back to work.

"Dr. Erickson," Janelle said at my left elbow. "Welcome back. I've got your gloves."

She had walked in on the recall, and the charge nurse had been too busy with thirty children to argue.

I did not look at her.

"Suction," I said.

She handed it over, smooth and quick, because she is the best scrub nurse I have ever worked with.

That is the problem I had spent nine days learning to see.

For ten years her hands had made me better than I was.

I found the bleeder behind the spleen, and the monitor began to climb.

"Pressure's falling," the anesthetist said. "He needs blood."

"Janelle, call it up."

"Calling now," she said, and she lifted the wall phone.

She held it to her ear.

A long moment stretched.

She was not speaking into it.

"Put it down," I said.

"Doctor, it's ringing, they're slammed because of the bus."

"Put it down."

She set the receiver in its cradle, very gently, and smiled at me over her mask.

"I only meant I didn't want to rush them."

"Runner," I said, loud enough for the whole room. "Go to the blood bank in person. Tell them OR One needs four units, and wait there until you carry them back."
