Chapter 8: It's AI

Janelle laughed.

It was a light, tired laugh, and she tucked her hair behind her ear.

"My phone? Ansel. It's three in the morning. What is this?"

"Give it to me."

"Not until you tell me what's wrong."

My husband did not argue.

He held up the cheap black phone Eli had given him, and he pressed play on the speaker.

Her voice filled the NICU.

It was calm and clear, with a kettle ticking behind it.

"Every one gets answered by me," the recording said. "She hears him say hang up. That is all I want."

The nurse at the door put her hand over her mouth.

Another nurse had come in behind her, and a respiratory tech behind that. All of them stood in the dim light and listened.

"Make sure she hears him choose."

Ansel stopped it.

Nobody moved.

On the monitors, the numbers kept climbing and dipping in their green lines.

I watched Janelle's face, and I saw her decide.

It took no time at all.

Her eyes filled, and she put her hand flat on her chest.

"Oh, Ansel," she said, and her voice shook. "Oh, no. Who gave you that?"

"The boy who watched the door."

"That isn't me." She turned to the staff, to the nurse, to the tech. "That is not me. Do you hear what he's playing? It's the same scam. It's the exact thing we were warned about on Monday."

"It's your voice," Ansel said.

"It is a copy of my voice." She straightened her shoulders, sounding brave. "They only need a short clip of anyone, Ansel. You read the email to the whole department. I put the sign up myself."

The respiratory tech looked at the floor.
