Chapter 12: The Forgery

Glenn was at the Stroud Labs door by six-thirty, with his hair flat on one side.

He held a laptop against his chest.

He put it on the desk by the window and opened a PDF.

"Here," he said. "Read the top."

Dani read.

PERPETUAL ASSIGNMENT OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY.

Below it, in tidy legal language, was a single paragraph.

Dani Kehoe assigned to Halloway Systems every right to the software known as Beacon, forever, in exchange for one dollar.

It was dated six years ago.

At the bottom was her name, in her own hand.

It was a perfect copy.

Every loop and slant and crooked tail was right.

Beneath it was a round purple stamp.

Notary Public, State of Washington. Tatum Kensley.

Dani stared at it.

Nolan, who had come in behind Glenn with two coffees, read it over her shoulder and went quiet.

"It's good," Dani said, finally. "It's my signature. Somebody lifted it from the license."

"The signature isn't the problem," Glenn said. He was nearly bouncing. "Look at the stamp. Look at the date."

Dani looked.

"Tatum didn't work for us six years ago," Glenn said. "She joined four years ago in March. I remember because she brought donuts to the engineering floor on her first day and nobody trusted her."

"She could have been a notary before she joined."

"Sure. But she'd have had to witness you signing a document at a company she'd never heard of." Glenn opened a second window. "I pulled her HR file. Her hire date is on it. And her notary commission..."

He turned the screen.
