Chapter 17: On the Record

Duncan's POV

My District Attorney was waiting for me at eight the next morning, with the door of his office open and a photograph on his desk.

It was a long-lens shot of the loading dock at the Civic Hall.

In it, Laurel Kershaw had her back against a door, and I had my hand at the back of her neck.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat. I slid my phone out of my jacket pocket, and I pressed the red button on the screen, and I put it back.

The state allows one party to record a conversation. I had checked the statute at six.

Marshall's text from the night before was still on my phone: the car leaves the lot Friday at midnight, be at the house by ten.

I had shown it to Laurel before I slept. Neither of us had a plan yet that didn't need her to be in the room.

"Who took that?" I asked.

"Marshall's people. They sent it over at midnight."

"It's a kiss, sir. It's not a crime."

"It's a conflict of interest. You were the special prosecutor on that woman's case until a week ago." He folded his hands. "Marshall has filed a complaint with the bar. Leaking evidence to a defendant, and an improper relationship."

"The photographs I put in the record were the State's own."

"The photographs were the end of your usefulness." He leaned back. "I'm trying to help you, Duncan. You can resign your assignment, take the leave I'm offering, and let this go quiet."

"Or?"

"Or the board takes your license, and nobody in this state hires you again."

I kept my face still. I had learned that from watching her.
