The white envelope was thin and unsealed.
Lars had never sealed anything he wanted me to read.
Chloe moved before I did.
She came across the rug in three strides and grabbed for it, with her nails out.
Soren put his arm in front of her.
"Get your hands off my husband's letter!" she said.
"It's addressed to Annika," said the bow-tie man, who had come up beside me, shaking with age. "Let her read it."
"Read it out loud, dear," the retired judge said. "We're all family here."
I unfolded the page.
It was a single sheet, written in blue ink, in Lars's small square hand.
My eyes blurred, and I had to blink twice before I could say it.
"September thirteenth," I read.
"Kiddo.
If you are reading this, I got something wrong.
In June I married your sister.
