Chapter 21: Old Habits
She turned up on a Sunday, four days after she vanished, and she had sent invitations.
Every reporter in the city got a text at nine.
So did the five wives from the brunch, and the retired judge, and the clients who had stood up in the boardroom.
Chloe Krebs will speak at noon on the Pfister terrace, the text said. She will answer for her sister.
Rosalyn read it aloud to us in Soren's kitchen with a peppermint in her cheek.
"She wants a crowd," Rosalyn said. "Don't give her one."
"She's got one already," said Soren.
He was in his badge and his grey coat, and his jaw was set.
"Two plainclothes officers are at the front. Two are at the back. The judge won't sign her arrest until the lab reports on the bullets."
"So you can't take her."
"I can ask her to come in, and she can say no."
"She'll say no."
"Then we watch her talk."
I took my mother's cassette off the table.
