Chapter 22: The Courtroom
"Nika," Chloe whispered across the table, "don't move."
I didn't.
The radio hissed beside the gun.
"Mom's about to say your name," I said, very low.
"What?"
"There's more on the tape. She says it right before the end."
On the cassette, a chair scraped, and my mother's voice came back close to the microphone.
"Chloe-bug, come say good night to the tape."
A small voice said, "Good night, tape."
"Tell it what you want to be when you grow up."
"Nika," said the small voice.
Somebody on the terrace laughed, once, and stopped.
"You want to be Nika?" said my mother.
"I want to be her," said the child. "She's the good one."
The click at the end of the tape was very loud.
Chloe's hand shook on the table.
Soren's hand came down over hers from behind her chair.
He closed his fingers around the revolver and the web of her hand, and lifted it gently.
She let him.
He opened the cylinder and tipped it.
Six bullets rolled onto the white cloth, one after another, and the whole terrace saw.
