Chapter 12: At the Door

Colby was sitting on Bridget's doormat when I got home.

It was eleven in the morning, and the hall smelled like someone's toast.

He had on yesterday's clothes.

His hair stuck up on one side, and his eyes were red, and in one hand he held a bunch of gas station tulips with the price still on them.

"Hal."

I stopped on the top step.

Behind me, Rhys had dropped me at the curb and gone, because I had asked him to.

"Please go away," I said.

"I need two minutes."

"You have one."

He stood up, wincing.

"Have you seen it?"

"Yes."

"She says it's mine."

I said nothing.

"She called me at six this morning, crying," he said. "She says it's a miracle, and that we're going to be a family. And I don't even know."

"That's not my problem."

"Hal, I wanted a baby with you."

The tulips shook.

"For years I wanted it. Every time you said later, I thought, fine, later. And I'm going to have one with her, and I can't tell if I'm happy or if I'm going to be sick."

I looked at him.

I tried to find the man I had married on a hot June day, and the one who held my hair when I had the flu.
