Chapter 13: Say Yes

Rhys came to the Corner Tap at closing, and Bridget made him sit on the stool by the register where she could see his hands.

"I'm not going to do anything with them," he said.

"Everyone says that," Bridget said. "Coffee?"

"Please."

She set it in front of him and went back to wiping the same clean glass.

I sat on the next stool with my bandaged palm flat on the bar.

I had read his three messages forty times since morning.

"Say it again," I said. "Slowly. Like I'm Bridget."

"I'm right here," Bridget said.

Rhys turned the mug a quarter turn on the wood.

"Her team called the Falcons this morning. Delaney is telling Northline she is my wife."

"Of her own free will," I said.

"She's getting ahead of it. She knows you know. She doesn't know how much."

"What's the story she's telling?"

"We separated quietly last fall. She and Colby stayed friends, and they got close again when she was lonely. The baby is his." His jaw moved once. "And the captain stands beside her on the screen, so nobody wonders why the captain is quiet."

"She wants you to bless it," Bridget said.

"She wants me to stand there."

I looked at the ring of wet where his mug had been.

"Rhys. Can it be yours?"

I had been waiting all day to ask, and it still came out smaller than I meant.

He didn't look away from me.

"I've slept in the guest room for fourteen months," he said. "She told me it was her insomnia. In November I was on the road for nineteen days, Dallas and then Vancouver."
