Chapter 7: Twelve Women

Marcy had booked the back room of a bakery on Dock Street for ten in the morning.

"I told the owner we'd need twelve chairs and a lot of tissues," she said. "She gave us a free tray of scones."

"Did you pay for the scones?"

"No, because I'm not insane. Sit down, Jo."

The twelve women were already there.

They had come in coats and sensible shoes, with their phones out and their reading glasses on.

The silver-haired woman from the bar was at the head of the table with her tote bag of binders.

"Dr. Wexford," she said. "I hope you don't mind if I run the meeting."

"Please."

"Good." She slid a legal pad toward me. "We made a list of questions on the way."

I read the first line.

"Who took our money?"

"That's the right question," I said.

I had twelve envelopes in my bag.

Each one held a cashier's check for four thousand dollars, with my own name at the top as the payer.

I laid them out in a row on the table.

A woman in a cardigan turned hers over twice to check the amount.

"You didn't have to do this in person," she said.

"I did, though."

"Why?"

"Because I'm the one who told you it was safe to give a man your trust," I said. "I stood on a stage for a year and taught that. Handing you a check is the smallest thing I can do."
