Chapter 19: Ottavia

I closed the laptop and put the drive in my bra.

Then I opened the door.

Ottavia Castellucci stood on my father's stoop in her black wool coat, with her pocketbook on her arm, under the plaster Saint Anthony.

Her face was bare. No powder. I'd never seen it bare.

"I sent the car around the block," she said. "May I come in? Or do we do this where the neighbors can see?"

"The neighbors went to bed at nine."

"Not in Bensonhurst."

I stepped back. She came in.

She looked at the sheet still over my father's recliner, the glitter card on the fridge, Aaron standing in the kitchen doorway with his arms folded.

"The man with the car," she said.

"The man with the car," Aaron agreed.

"Sit, Ottavia," I said. "I'll make coffee. That's what my mother would want."

"Your mother was a good woman. She made terrible coffee."

"So do I."

She almost smiled.

She sat at my father's table with her pocketbook in her lap and her back straight.

I put the moka pot on and stood by the stove with my arms crossed.
