"I'll be there," I said.
Silvio went quiet. He'd been ready for a fight.
"Behind her chair?"
"In the room, Silvio. Wear a nice tie."
I hung up before he could hear me smile.
Aaron was looking at me sideways on the federal steps.
"You just told him yes."
"I told him what he wanted to hear. He's always liked that best."
We had five days.
Delfina called a meeting at my father's kitchen table for Tuesday night.
She brought a tray of baked ziti and the three wives from brunch.
The wife from the docks brought cannoli. The young wife brought both babies and her sister from the linen plant's night shift, a tired woman in her forties who sat down and said, "So you're the one who pays me."
"The plant pays you," I said.
"You sign it."
"I sign it."
She nodded, satisfied, and took a cannoli.
The old concrete wife came last, on her cane, and took my father's recliner.
Aaron came down the stairs with an armful of foam boards from an office supply store.
He'd drawn the whole wall on them in three colors of marker.
