Chapter 10: Sales Day

Bozeman Motors held its Fall Family Savings Event on the Wednesday before the gala.

I knew because the radio had been telling me for a week.

Brent's mother's face smiled down from a billboard over Lakeshore Drive, next to the words FAMILY FIRST SINCE 1974.

I put Posy in her car seat, and my father drove.

Ward sat in the back beside her with his arms folded.

"I should stay in the truck," he said.

"You should."

"I'm going to anyway."

"I know."

The lot was full of balloons.

A tall inflatable man waved his arms in front of the showroom, and there were folding tables with free hot dogs and a stack of raffle tickets.

Brent stood on a little platform by the front row of trucks, holding a microphone.

He wore a bright tie and a bright smile, and his voice was the one he used when selling.

"Folks, nobody treats you like family like we do!"

About eighty people stood around the platform with their kids.

Some of them had been at the brunch.

I could see it in how they looked at me when I came up the lot with the car seat.

I put it down next to the platform and took out the envelope.

Brent saw me, and the microphone drooped.

"Cor," he said, quietly, away from it.

"Keep going," I said. "I just need a minute."

I reached up and took the microphone out of his hand.

He let me, because eighty people were watching and he didn't know how to stop it.

"Hi," I said.

My voice carried across the lot in a small, shaky echo.

"My name is Corrine Lawton. Most of you know me from the elementary school, or from Brent's mother's Christmas party."

Somebody in the crowd said, "Hi, Mrs. Bozeman."

"It's Lawton," I said. "Eight days ago I had an emergency C-section. My husband walked out of my emergency surgery and took my daughter's blanket to another woman's delivery room."
