Chapter 14: Brent at the Door

Corrine's POV

On Saturday morning Brent stood on my father's porch with a bunch of grocery-store carnations.

He had on yesterday's shirt, and he hadn't shaved.

Ward had been at the lawyer's office since dawn, answering Summer's filing for sole custody of his son.

The papers called him a stranger who had abandoned the boy, and Ward had read that line aloud twice at our table without a word.

I saw him through the front window and carried Posy to the door myself.

Norm came up behind me and stood there with a dish towel over his shoulder.

"Cor," Brent said. "Thank you for opening up."

"I didn't open it for you. I opened it to see what you'd do."

"I brought these."

"Put them on the rail."

He set them down.

His hand went into his coat pocket and came out holding something small.

It was my grandmother's ring, the thin gold one with a chip of garnet, the one I kept in a dish on the Marsh Street dresser.

"I took it the night I moved out," he said. "I wanted you to know nothing of yours is left in that house for my mother to throw away."

"You took my ring so your mother wouldn't throw it away."

"That's what I'm saying."

"You took it, Brent."

He swallowed.

"I'm giving it back."

I held out my free hand, and he put the ring in my palm.

It was warm from his pocket.

I closed my fingers over it and put it in my sweater.

"I've got nothing," he said. "Mom froze the accounts. I'm sleeping in the back of the Buick. I've got a daughter I can't see and a wife who won't talk to me."
