Chapter 7: The Locksmith

I did not open the door.

I stood in the hall in my robe, with my phone raised, and spoke to my husband through the doorbell speaker.

"Brennan, it's two in the morning."

"I know, babe. I'm sorry. I just want to come home and see our daughter."

"This isn't your home."

"It's where I live." He turned his smile on the camera. "This gentleman is going to get the door open and then we'll talk like adults."

The locksmith shifted on his feet.

He was a heavy man in his fifties, and he did not look like he wanted to be on my porch.

"Sir," he said, "you told me it was your own place."

"It is."

"I just need to see something with your name and this address."

Brennan patted his pockets and came up with a folded paper.

He held it up to the camera, then to the locksmith.

"Marriage license," Brennan said. "I'm her husband. Wife's inside. She's had a baby, she's emotional."

Behind me in the kitchen, Alastair had stopped moving.

I could see him through the doorway, holding my sleeping daughter with his back against the refrigerator.

He met my eyes and tipped his head toward the door. His look said, Do you want me out there?

I shook my head.

Then I called the police on my own phone, in a clear, calm voice, and told the dispatcher there was a man trying to drill my lock at two in the morning with a newborn in the house.

"Babe, don't," Brennan said through the speaker. He had heard me. "You'll regret this."

The side gate banged open.

Hazel came around the corner of the house in her nightgown and her winter boots, with the pan in one hand and a flashlight in the other.
