Chapter 4: Chicken and Rice
On Tuesday afternoon Selene rang my doorbell holding a container of soup.
I knew who it was before I opened the door, because the housekeeper had gone to the market and the whole house felt too quiet.
She stood on the step in a pale pink coat with her hair done in a smooth wave.
"Mrs. Carrow, I'm so sorry to come without calling," she said. "I should have."
"Katja is fine."
"Katja." She said it carefully. "I made chicken and rice. Desmond said you had a cold."
I had sneezed twice on Sunday.
I hadn't told him.
"Come in," I said.
She stepped into my front hall and looked around at the staircase and the coats on the hooks, and then she held out the soup with both hands.
It was still warm.
I took it into the kitchen and put it on the counter, and she followed me and did not sit down until I told her to.
"I wanted to apologize about Friday night," she said. "The car. Putting you in that position. I told Desmond I could take a taxi, and he wouldn't hear of it."
"It was raining."
"It was awful of me to say yes."
She meant it.
I watched her face while she said it, and I could not find a crack in it.
She looked tired.
She had faint shadows under her eyes.
"You took the patch," I said.
"It worked." She laughed softly. "I didn't feel sick at all. You're very kind."
"I'm not sure that's true."
"It's true to me."
She turned her wrist on the counter, and the gold bracelet slid down her arm and the little cradle charm swung against the stone.
