Chapter 11: The Near-Miss

The principal's office had a ficus, a box of tissues, and a printout of the comment thread on the desk.

The principal had circled four words in red.

"Two parents called," she said. "One of them wants you off the reading nights. I told her I'd look into it."

"And will you?" I asked.

"I looked." She slid the page toward me. "I read all two hundred comments. Then I read the ones from last Saturday, from the people who were actually at that shower."

She tapped a line near the bottom.

A woman had written: I was there. Nobody screamed. The librarian counted nothing out loud. A retired nurse did.

"My sister was at the shower," the principal said. "She says the librarian sat in the back row and ate a sandwich."

"It was a triangle," I said. "Egg salad."

The principal almost smiled.

"I'm not removing you from anything," she said. "But it would help if you stayed off that woman's page."

"I haven't been on it."

"Then you're doing better than most of the school board."

I walked out into the cold at four with my bag on my shoulder and nothing in my hands.

Pia had a double shift.

I drove to the cottage alone.

At six, a truck's headlights swept across Gran's kitchen wall.

I knew the engine.

Anders had replaced the windshield in a parking lot in town, and the new glass was so clean I could see the porch light in it.

I opened the door before he knocked.

"I said you couldn't sit on my porch," I said.

"I'm not sitting."

"You've got a casserole."

"A pot of wild rice soup. From Pia." He held it up. "She said I had to deliver it in person or she'd send me a bill."
