Chapter 12: The Sunday Table
Birgit set the table for six on Sunday, with the good cups and a vase of white chrysanthemums.
I took the chair at the far end.
Anders came in last and sat across from me.
He did not say good morning.
Nils's lawyer sat at Birgit's left with a leather folder, and Kristin sat at her right in a pale blue dress, with both hands folded on her stomach.
Nils took the chair at the head of the table, and for once nobody had told him to.
"Let's begin," said Birgit. "We've all had a hard few weeks. I'd like to end them today."
She nodded to the lawyer, who opened the folder.
"A family agreement," Birgit said. "I've put a good deal of thought into it. The boatyard shares my husband left me will go into a trust for both grandchildren, equally. Nils will pay Britta a fair monthly amount. In return, Britta will sign over any claim to the cottage on Larsmont Road, and she will stop speaking about Kristin in public."
"In public," I said.
"The comments, dear. The talk at your school."
"I haven't said a word at my school."
"Then it costs you nothing to sign."
The lawyer slid a paper down the length of the cloth.
It stopped in front of my cup.
I looked at the top line.
It had my grandmother's address on it, spelled correctly.
I picked up the paper and turned it over, so the print faced the table.
"No," I said.
Birgit smiled.
"I thought you might say that. Please reflect. It's more generous than you'd get anywhere."
"It's more generous than I deserve," I said. "That's why I'm saying no."
