Chapter 30: The Worst Thing
"Not forever," I told Teddy. "Daddy and I are working on it."
"How long?"
"Not long. Eat your peas."
He ate one pea, with great suspicion, and I went out the back door in my socks.
The garage light was on.
Daniel sat on the edge of the cot with his elbows on his knees and a school binder open beside him.
He looked up, and tried to look as though he wasn't waiting.
"Is Teddy all right?"
"He wants to know how long you plan to be out here."
"Whatever you say."
"That's the answer I hate." I sat down beside him on the cot, and it creaked. "I have one more test."
He closed the binder.
"Rule three," I said. "One honest answer a day. You've kept it to the letter, and I know what it cost. This one is the last."
"Ask me."
"Tell me the worst thing you thought. In three years. The thing you'd never put in a letter."
He was silent so long that I heard the refrigerator humming through the wall.
I did not help him.
"After the second year," he said at last, very low, "I wished you'd stop asking about the lake road."
"Daniel."
"Let me finish. Some nights you woke up with your hands shaking and said you dreamed about headlights, and I held you, and the whole time I was praying you wouldn't remember. I wasn't praying for you. I was praying I wouldn't have to say it."
His hands had knotted together between his knees.
"I told myself it was kindness. It was cowardice. Some nights I was glad you were afraid, because afraid, you stayed where I could see you."
It hurt to hear.
It was also the first thing he'd ever told me that I couldn't have guessed.
