Chapter 31: Home

Friday night I put the kids to bed myself, with two stories each and a glass of water that nobody drank.

Then I stood on the back step in my robe and looked at the garage window.

I had a clear head.

I had slept eight hours, eaten breakfast, and signed my own discharge papers, with a dying plant watching me do it.

I crossed the yard and knocked on the garage door.

Daniel opened it with a pencil behind his ear.

"Laura?"

"Pack your toothbrush," I said. "I'm asking you back."

He didn't move.

"Say it again."

"Come home, Daniel. Come upstairs. Come to our bed, and sleep in it, and wake up in it, and stop paying for something I've already counted."

"You're sure."

"I'm standing at a garage door in my bathrobe. Yes, I'm sure."

He laughed, and it cracked in the middle.

Then he shut the door behind him and picked me up off the grass, and I held on to his neck, and he carried me across the yard and through the kitchen and up the stairs, past the kids' rooms, in the dark.

He set me down in our bedroom and lit the lamp.

"Hello, Mrs. Pierce," he said.

"Rule one is dead, Mr. Pierce," I said. "I'm burying it properly."

I untied my robe.

He stood very still while I let it fall.

I walked him backward until his knees hit the bed, and sat him down, and knelt between his legs on our bedroom rug.

"Laura, you don't have to."

"I want to. Be quiet."

I unbuttoned his jeans and pulled them down, and took his cock in my hand, hard already, hot and heavy against my palm.

I licked the head, slow, and tasted him, and he made a sound I had waited three years to hear in this room.
