Chapter 12: Whose Name

Nobody spoke for a long time.

The stove ticked as it cooled.

Megan turned the burner off and set down her spoon, and she didn't make a sound doing it.

Amber covered her face with both hands.

"Who is?" Heath's wife asked.

She didn't say it harshly.

She only wanted to hear the name.

"It's Heath," Amber said through her fingers.

The words seemed to travel around the kitchen and come back.

Heath's wife nodded once, slowly.

Her hands stayed flat on the table.

"Tell me when."

"July." Amber dropped her hands. Her eyes were swollen. "There was a client dinner downtown, and Cory had left early. Heath drove me home. He came up to get my umbrella."

"Did you want him to?"

"I thought I did." She laughed in a broken way. "I'd been seeing Cory since April, and I thought Heath was just being nice about it. He told me he was lonely. He said his wife wasn't paying attention."

Heath's wife closed her eyes for a moment.

"I was in Maine that week," she said. "My mother had a surgery."

"I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Keep going."

"It happened twice. And then I was late." Amber wiped her face with her sleeve. "I told Heath first, because I was scared. He went very quiet. He said it was a mistake, and we couldn't tell anyone, and he'd take care of it."

"Take care of it," I said.

"He didn't mean that. He didn't want me to, I mean. He said I shouldn't." She pressed her hand to her stomach. "He said Cory was already in love with me, and Cory would be thrilled. He said Cory had wanted a baby for years."
