Chapter 13: Four in One Room
Maisie walked out of Founders Hall in a borrowed black dress with her father's name still hanging in the air behind her.
We went after her, all three of us, down the marble steps and across the dark quad.
She didn't stop until she reached the fountain.
Then she sat down on the stone edge and laughed so hard she had to put her head on her knees.
"I just told my father to keep it," she said. "In front of the Chancellor."
"You did," Nate said.
"I have eleven dollars."
"I have four," said Bridie.
"I have a bat," she added, a second later, because that seemed to be her contribution.
Nate crouched in front of his sister and held her face in both hands.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I should have told you everything a long time ago."
"You should have told me you were married. I'd have been so much nicer to your wife." She wiped her nose on her sleeve. "I told her you were my boyfriend. I'm going to be embarrassed about that for a decade."
"A decade is about right," I said.
She laughed again, wetly, and held out her arms, and Nate folded her up.
Over her curls he looked at me.
I knew what the look was asking.
"You can all come to mine," I said. "It's one room. There's one bathroom, and the dryers run until midnight."
"I love it already," Maisie said into his shirt.
We were halfway down Pike Street when the car passed us.
It was long and gray, and it slowed beside the curb ahead.
