Chapter 8: Take It Off the Chain

"We need a plan," Maisie announced, and wrote PLAN on the back of a pizza box.

Bridie sat on the desk with her bat across her knees.

Nate stayed against the wall with the toast card in his hand.

"The plan is I stand up first," he said.

"Before your dad?"

"Before he finishes the sentence."

"And say what?"

"The truth."

"In front of two hundred trustees," Bridie said. "And their wives."

"And their donors," said Maisie. "And the Chancellor, whose daughter apparently agreed to this."

"She didn't agree to anything," Nate said. "She has a boyfriend in Portland and no idea this is happening. It's only a toast. He'll say it and watch everyone clap."

"Then you stand up and stop him."

"Yes."

"And then?"

Nate folded the card in half.

"Then I lose the job, the apartment, and my trust fund, and so do you."

Maisie waved her marker.

"I never wanted the trust fund. It's got Dad's name on it."

"Your tuition is in that trust."

"Then I'll get a loan, like a normal freshman."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"That's brave."

"No, it's cheap," she said. "Brave is Roxy walking into the Faculty Club and turning down two hundred grand."

I glanced at her.

"How did you know that?"

"Dad's driver told the front desk, the front desk told the dining hall, and the dining hall told me over eggs. This campus is a small town with a bell tower."
