The reporter lifted his camera, and Peyton stepped into the light.

"Ms. Olmstead, my friend has a few questions," she said. "About how the Chair of a freight company came to marry a payroll clerk to inherit it."

"Dispatcher," a voice said from the coffee cart, not loudly.

"I'm sorry?"

"He was a night dispatcher, not a clerk," the dispatcher said. "He drove out to Route 22."

Peyton's smile twitched, and she went on.

"My point stands. The Chair has been lying to this building for two years."

I let go of Roan's hand and stepped forward.

"Go ahead and ask," I said to the reporter.

He lowered the camera an inch.

"Is it true you married your husband to meet a condition in your father's will?"

"Yes."

A murmur ran up the atrium.

"I said so in front of four hundred people on Saturday, and I'll say it into your recorder now."

"I'll also say that the man I chose is the best dispatcher I've ever signed a paycheck for."

The reporter blinked, and his thumb stopped over the button.

He had come for a scandal and been handed a confession.

"That's it?" he said.
