At six on Monday morning, three hundred drivers and dispatchers stood in the Strip District yard under the floodlights with their breath smoking.
Nobody had brought a banner.
They stood in work jackets with their hands in their pockets.
I climbed onto the bed of a flatbed truck with no microphone, and Roan stayed at the bottom with his arms folded.
The wind came off the Allegheny and smelled of diesel and wet iron.
"Good morning," I said. "I'm the person who signs the memos."
A few men almost laughed.
"You asked for an answer, and I'm here to give it."
A driver near the front stepped out of the crowd.
He was fifty or so, with a gray beard and a hat that said Erie Run in faded letters, and he did not smile.
"We've got three questions, Chair," he said. "Do you mind?"
"Ask all three."
"One. You put a man in charge of this building because you married him. Did you put him there for us, or for you?"
