Chapter 23: Chapter 23
The lamp on my father's desk had been dark for four years.
At nine that night I took a bulb from the bottom drawer, next to Fran's rye.
Roan stood in the doorway of the office with a paper bag of Thai food and watched me climb onto the leather chair.
"Is this a ceremony?" he asked.
"It's a bulb."
"You're wearing a face."
"It's the face I wear for bulbs."
I unscrewed the dead one and set it in the trash, and my hands were not quite steady.
The new one lit at the first click.
Yellow light spread over the desk, the old blotter and the photograph of my grandfather's first truck.
I climbed down and stood next to it, not breathing.
"He wouldn't let anyone touch it," I said. "He said it would be fixed when there was someone to see by it."
Roan set the bag on a side table and came over.
He stood behind me, and his arms came around my waist.
