Chapter 13: Forgiven

Brendan did not shout.

That was the first thing that frightened me.

He arrived at the suite at noon in his travel clothes, put down his bag, and took my face in both hands.

His eyes were red.

"I know," he said.

"Brendan."

"Tallis showed me."

His thumbs stroked my cheeks.

"I'm not angry. I'm heartbroken. I know it's my fault. I left you alone in a hundred hotel rooms, and you reached for the nearest warm thing."

Jack was not in the room.

I had sent him to the dock an hour earlier with a look.

I was grateful now.

"It was a mistake," Brendan said softly. "I forgive you. I want you to hear me say it. I forgive you."

"You haven't asked what happened."

"I don't need to."

"Brendan."

"Tonight," he said, "we'll tell the truth. Together."

I understood in that moment exactly what he intended to do.

He had been handed a gift.

I had spent a month building a case against him, and he had picked up a ruined wife.

He would not hide it.

He would use it.

The Milwaukee show was sold out.

It was a hall called the Riverside, with a balcony, carved plaster angels and twenty-four hundred people in velvet seats.
