Chapter 15: Tailgate
The box truck was parked at the far end of the lot, away from the lights.
Jack rolled up the back door with a clatter, and the dark inside smelled of canvas and cold metal and the faint warm sweetness of the road.
He put his hands on my waist and lifted me up onto the lip of the truck bed.
I laughed.
"I'm a size sixteen."
"I know exactly what size you are," he said. "I have thought about it for six weeks."
He climbed up after me and pulled the door down behind us.
The dark shut around us.
He flicked on a work light clipped to the wall.
It lit a bed of stacked moving blankets, a nest of black quilted pads he had laid out as a cot on long nights.
He had slept here.
He had slept here while I lay in a suite upstairs beside another man.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
I took his face and kissed him, hard.
It was nothing like the first night.
That night had been grief, and wonder, and rain.
This one was fury.
The fury I had put away in a drawer for a month came up all at once, and I bit his lip, and he groaned.
