Chapter 16: Four Women and a Bowling Alley

Maisie picked the bowling alley because nobody in the Devoted Tour's world would ever walk into one.

It was a narrow place in Chicago with sticky carpet, glowing lanes and a jukebox that played the same song twice.

We took lane nine at the back.

The radio host came in with her braid down and the Hearthside brand manager at her side.

The brand manager still wore her lanyard, tucked inside her coat.

"I told you I'd bring someone," the host said. "She's been sitting in her car outside my hotel for an hour."

"I didn't know what to say," the brand manager said.

"You say sit down," Maisie said, and shoved a pitcher of beer across the table.

So we sat.

Four women, one lane, a bowl of cheese fries going cold.

Nobody bowled.

"All right," I said. "I want you to do something strange."

The host raised an eyebrow.

"Take out your phones. Open his messages. Find the one he sent you that you loved the most."

They looked at me.

"I'll go first," I said. "Maisie."

Maisie read from her screen, where she had saved the one the host had forwarded her.

"'I will love you in every version of the world that exists.'"

The host nodded slowly.

"That was the first one he sent me. I cried in a parking lot."
