Chapter 10: What the Hands Remember

By dawn the whole camp knew a Black Lotus assassin had died under a plum tree, and half of it wanted Ji-han's head.

Hyeong Jeong-seok stood on a cart in the middle of the tents.

"The cult has broken the Peace of the Pass," he announced, with real grief in his voice.

"A dead killer in cult black, in the Leader's own hunt."

"And his killer," he added gently, "was a man who has sworn he remembers nothing."

Seven hundred eyes turned to Ji-han.

He stood beside the Leader in a borrowed coat, with the Leader's good arm around his shoulders, and said nothing.

The Leader was pale.

He had a sling under his robe and a bandage thick as a pillow, and he still stood very straight.

"The Leader took an arrow meant for his husband," Hyeong said. "Yet he bleeds. How curious that one man's hands should be so skilled."

"The assassin's brand is wrong," said Maeng Soo-hwa.

She was sitting on the rim of a water barrel with a cup of tea, as casual as a cat.

"Beg pardon, Envoy?"

"It isn't ours. Look at the petals."

"Anyone can ink a flower."

"Anyone can ink eight petals, sure," said Maeng. "That boy has nine. Count them yourself."

A murmur ran through the crowd.

Hyeong smiled at her with great patience.

"A fine trick," he said. "I would expect the cult to call its own work a forgery."
