Chapter 13: Two Liars
The shutter swung closed behind Maeng with a small wooden click.
Ji-han did not turn around.
He stood at the window and counted his own heartbeats, because counting was what he did when the floor went out from under him.
Behind him the bed ropes creaked as a big man sat up.
"She's right," the Leader said.
His voice was rough with sleep, and it did not shake.
That undid Ji-han more than a lie would have.
He had braced for a lie.
He turned.
The Leader sat on the edge of the bed in the grey light, bare to the waist, his hair loose around his shoulders.
The sash had left pink marks on both of his wrists.
The veil hat lay on the chair, where it always lay when he thought nobody was looking.
"How long have you known?" the Leader asked.
"Since the drawer."
"You opened the drawer."
"I'm not proud of it."
"I'd have opened it sooner." The Leader rubbed his face with both hands. "I kept hoping you would."
Ji-han held onto the windowsill behind him.
"Who are you?"
The Leader took a breath that went all the way down.
"My name is Gwon Tae-san."
"Tae-san," Ji-han said.
It came out of his mouth before he could stop it.
