Chapter 7: Council Seat
The ribbon hung in the air between two of Hyeong's fingers.
The Hall waited.
Ji-han had a whole speech ready about the physician and his missing memory, and a lot of very good blinking.
He didn't get to use it.
"I tied it," said the Leader.
Every head turned.
The Leader stepped up beside Ji-han with the veil hat on, and his voice was perfectly steady.
"On the wedding morning," he said. "In my family, white is a luck color."
"I tied it into my husband's hair myself, with my own hands."
"I'm told it has been there ever since."
"Your family," Hyeong said smoothly.
"My family."
"I did not know the Jin clan wore white for luck."
"There is a great deal about my household that the Vice-Leader does not know."
A rumble of approval came from the Mount Jade seat.
The sect heads liked a man who snubbed Hyeong in public.
Hyeong bowed, a shade too deep, and tucked the ribbon into his sleeve.
"A charming custom," he said. "I'll return it after the meeting."
He would not.
Ji-han would have to buy a new one.
Ji-han thought of the voice he had used on the roof.
He thought of the question Hyeong's spy had carried back: does he take orders, or does he give them.
Hyeong was not guessing.
He was building a case one plank at a time.
"To business," Hyeong said. "The Autumn Hunt."
A servant laid a scroll on the high table.
It was written in the formal old court script, with crabbed characters that took ten years to learn to read.
"The Alliance must vote on the site and the order of the hunt," Hyeong said. "Leader, if you would read the terms aloud?"
The Leader held the scroll for a long time.
