The decree became final on a Friday, and the Harbor Symphony opened its season that same night.
I did not know whether to laugh or cry, so I did both in the cab.
On the way I stopped at the church hall.
The bedsheet was gone from the front of the building.
In its place hung a real sign, painted by Thad's husband in cream and green.
ANNE LINFORD STRINGS, it said. FREE LESSONS. EVERY CHILD.
I stood on the sidewalk in my concert black with my cello at my feet and read it three times.
"Do you like it?" Thad said, appearing at the door in a velvet bow tie. "Say you like it. I cried when he finished the N."
"Where did the money come from?"
"A certain cashier's check you cashed on the Monday after the gala."
"Back wages," I said. "Six years at a nurse's rate."
"It covers the roof, the insurance, the new radiators, and two scholarships. And it's a little over. I've been told to say that we're keeping the lost-and-found cello for the kids who don't have one."
"I'd like that."
He hugged me, hard, in his bow tie.
"Go be a third chair," he said, into my hair. "Make us all cry."
