Chapter 6: The Clause
"What does scandalous mean?" I asked.
"Whatever a judge in Lake County decides it means," the lawyer said. "And the judge golfs at your husband's club."
"So if the painting comes out, I get nothing."
"If it comes out, his lawyers will hold it up in court and call it hidden conduct. You'd likely lose the three million. You might lose more than that in the room."
"And if I sign his waiver, I lose the three million anyway."
"Yes."
"So it's the same three million either way."
She took her glasses off.
"The difference is whether you keep your privacy."
I thought about that for a long time.
I thought about the girl on the blue sheet in the lamplight over Hutch's bed.
"I've never had privacy," I said. "I've had a secret. They're not the same thing."
She looked at me over the desk for a second longer than she needed to.
Then she wrote something on her pad and underlined it twice.
"File it," I said.
She filed it.
I drove straight to Moonlite and went into the party room and shut the door.
I'd been sketching for a week, but only sketching.
Pencil is safe. You can erase pencil.
That afternoon I stretched a canvas on the floor and stapled it crooked, and I didn't care.
I started at four.
The light went at six, and I turned on every fluorescent tube in the ceiling and kept going.
I painted the view from the windows.
Milwaukee Avenue at night, wet, the bus going by, the neon moon reflected upside down in a puddle.
