Chapter 21: The Garden
Edie's POV
By noon on Sunday, three hundred folding chairs stood on the lawn of the river walk.
The Savannah River slid by below the bluff, wide and brown and slow.
A white cloth hung over the new plaque, and a dais stood at the north end with a lectern and a microphone.
In the front row, alone, stood a carved mahogany chair.
Patrick had carried it there himself at eight that morning.
He had set a glass at its place, and he had lit the candle.
Beatrix had stood over him with her cane.
"At last," she had said, and she had touched his cheek.
I wore a plain black dress of my own, bought for forty dollars, and no pearls.
I sat in the second row on the aisle with my phone in my lap.
Behind me the guests settled, hats and gloves and murmuring.
The doctor sat two rows back with a program in his hands.
The sheriff stood at the edge of the lawn, with his hat held against his chest.
In the front row on the other side of the aisle sat the judge, tall and bent and solemn.
He turned and gave me a small nod, the kind a man gives a widow's relative.
I nodded back.
Patrick stood at the end of my row with one hand on the back of my chair.
He had not taken his eyes off me since we arrived.
"Ready?" he said, very low.
"I'm always ready."
"Then I'll go see the man at the board."
