Chapter 23: Haldeck

The chandler's shop on Anchor Street had a green door, and the door was opened by a woman who came up to Yan's elbow.

She was eighty at least, with a shawl, a hairnet and a brown, creased face.

She looked at Yan for a long time.

Then she said something in Norvane, very fast.

Lu Wen understood it only because he had spent a year in this country listening to women on stairs.

"You are late," she said. "You are very late. Who has been feeding you?"

Yan, who had held a boardroom in his hand for three years, bent down and let himself be pulled by the sleeve into her shawl.

"Nobody, ma'am," he said in the thick, warm speech of the docks.

Lu Wen had never heard that voice.

It was younger, and it laughed.

"Nobody," the old woman repeated, scandalised, and let go. She turned her bright black eyes on Lu Wen. "And this?"

"This is Lu Wen," said Yan.

"The one who talks."

"The one who talks."

"Good," said the landlady. "He needs one who talks."

She took Lu Wen's face between both hands, looked at it closely, and nodded.

"Thin," she said. "Come. Soup."

The room above the shop was at the top of three flights of stairs.

It held an iron bed, a chair, a washstand and one small window.

It smelled of rope and tar and tea.

Yan stood in the doorway for a moment before he went in.
