Chapter 10: Drawer One

I shut the binder and shoved it back under the tax folders.

The front door opened.

I heard Chad's shoes on the hall floor, then Tierney's lighter step beside them.

My office exit was a glass door onto the patio.

I eased the latch up with two fingers and slid it open an inch at a time.

"Where did you leave it?" Tierney said, from the hall.

"The bottom drawer, I think."

I stepped out onto the cold flagstones and pulled the door shut behind me.

I crouched under the window frame, where the climbing rose had gone to thorns.

Through the glass I could see the room.

Chad came in and went straight to the desk.

He pulled out the drawer, looked at the binder, and took it out.

He didn't open it.

He weighed it in his hand.

"She was here Wednesday," Tierney said, from the doorway. "I watched her photograph the whole spare room."

"I know."

"What if she's seen this?"

"Then she's seen a gala schedule." He tucked it under his arm. "Tierney. Relax. She doesn't know anything, and the one person who does has never said a word in a thousand days."

"The neighbor."

"Dane would sooner cut off his hand than make her cry."

He said it fondly.

Tierney laughed.

"That's the best thing about him."

"It's the only thing about him."
