Chapter 22: The Hall
The wind at the top of the crane smelled of diesel and cold water.
Ingrid felt the old man's fist wrapped in her collar, and under it, his hand shaking.
He was not as strong as his voice.
"Do you know what your father said to me the last time?" Torsten murmured in her ear.
"He said, 'Torsten, you're my brother. I'll give you one more chance.'"
"I gave him one more chance, Ingrid. And you will get the same."
She said nothing.
She looked at the black lake ninety feet below and at the small figure in the yard, gone still, looking up.
She did not look afraid, because she was not.
She was counting.
"You're sixty-one," she said.
"What?"
"You're sixty-one years old, and you climbed ninety feet of ladder on a bad knee."
His grip shifted.
She felt his weight lean on the cane.
She stamped her boot heel down on his instep with everything she had.
He howled.
She drove her elbow back into his ribs, spun inside his arm, and hooked her leg behind his.
Torsten went down onto the catwalk grating, flat on his back, and the cane skittered away and rang off the rail.
