Chapter 9: The Board

On Wednesday, the Sandvik board met on the thirty-eighth floor, around a table made from a single piece of walnut.

Twelve directors sat in leather chairs.

Ingrid took the seat at the end.

Cavan stood against the wall behind her in the black suit, because there was no chair for a husband.

"We have one item," Torsten said, folding his hands.

"A matter of integrity."

He nodded to the lawyer from the courthouse, who rose with a folder.

"Last week the CEO entered a marriage," the lawyer said.

"Under the trust, that marriage decides who holds the family's voting shares."

"I have evidence that it was a purchase."

He took out a sheet and read it in a bored voice.

"Agreement between Ingrid Sandvik and Cavan Keegan. One year of marriage. Residence in the penthouse."

"Quiet divorce thereafter. In exchange, a payment of three million dollars."

The room hummed.

Directors turned and stared at Cavan.

Anders, in the chair beside his father, covered his smile with his hand.

Cavan realized how he had gotten it.

Anders had slipped it from the laptop bag in the garage, while it sat on the Volvo and five men lay on the floor.

"A paid husband," Torsten said sadly. "I'm sorry, Ingrid. You were lonely, and he saw an opportunity."

"Move to void," said the lawyer.

"Second," said Anders.

A director near the middle, a woman with white hair and half-moon glasses, cleared her throat.

"Ingrid. Is it true?"
