Chapter 14: Take Her and Go

Stefano's POV

I let Fabiola Neri into my kitchen because Cosima asked me to.

I did not like it.

She sat in my aunt's chair with a blanket over her knees, a day after a cesarean, and her hands would not stay still on the paper.

The night nurse stood behind her with a hand on her shoulder.

"He threw me out of the nursery," Fabiola said. "I asked to hold her once. Just once."

"And?" Cosima said.

"He said she was a Lucarelli and I was a vessel."

My aunt set a cup of broth in front of her, and said nothing, which was how she said most things.

"He said you'd be there by nightfall," Fabiola told Cosima. "He said you'd come crawling to the lake house and sign whatever he put in front of you."

"The lake house."

"The old boathouse on the north shore. It has four bedrooms and its own dock." She pushed the paper across the table. "That's where she is. I heard Ugo on the phone."

I picked up the paper and read the address.

"Why would you give me this?" I asked.

She looked at me.

She was twenty-six, and her face was grey, and she still tried the smile she had worn in the foyer.

It did not hold.

"Because I carried her for eight months, and nobody asked me anything," Fabiola said. "He told me she'd be mine."

"She was never yours," Cosima said.

"I know."

"Say it again."

"She's yours."

It was the first true thing I had heard that woman say.

I sent two men to the north shore with binoculars.

I sent Fabiola upstairs with my aunt and the nurse, and I locked the door from the outside.

Cosima stood by the window while we waited.
