Chapter 17: Skin to Skin
The family room on the third floor had two vinyl recliners and a window onto the parking structure where I had been with Teo.
Delfina sat in the wheelchair beside the nearest one, in a blue hospital gown, with her hair brushed.
She had put on lipstick.
A nurse laid my son in my arms, skin against my chest under an open blanket, and showed me where to hold his head.
"Talk to him," she said. "He knows voices."
She left, and the door sighed shut.
He weighed nothing.
His fist closed around my little finger, and he yawned my own mouth up at me.
I did not know I was crying until a drop fell on his hat.
"He does that when he's content," Delfina said softly. "He opens one eye and checks the room."
"Don't."
"I'm trying to be kind to you."
"You were kind for three weeks. It's a good act."
She flinched, but she nodded.
"It wasn't all an act. That's the worst of it."
Down in the lot a car door slammed.
"You'd have given up," Delfina said. "That's what I told myself. Two babies gone, a tank in a basement, a husband who said the word 'later.' I thought you'd have stopped asking. I wouldn't have."
"You didn't ask me."
"No."
"You had your own husband. You could have done it with him."
"Teo can't give me a child. I found that out in May, from a doctor's letter on his desk." Her mouth shook. "I was already carrying yours by then. He kept his secret and I kept mine, and we ate dinner every night in the same house."
