Chapter 24: The Table

On Saturday night the baby finally slept for four hours straight, and the monitor on the dresser breathed softly in the dark.

Teo's family house in Elmwood Park had stopped feeling like his.

The bedroom had my sister's lamp in it, and my green dress on the hook, and a crib in the next room with a yellow hat folded on the rail.

I lay on my side and watched him take off his watch.

"You're staring," he said.

"You said you'd read the instructions twice."

"I did."

"For the car seat. I'm wondering what else you read."

He turned around, slowly, and the corner of his mouth went up.

"Come here and I'll show you."

I crawled across the bed and knelt in front of him, and he took my face in both hands and kissed me.

It was a long, unhurried kiss.

His thumbs stroked my cheekbones, and my body woke all at once under my nightgown.

"Quiet," he murmured, against my mouth. "He just went down."

"Then you'd better be good at it."

He pulled the nightgown over my head and laid me on my stomach, and ran the flat of his hand slowly down my spine.

His mouth followed, over my shoulder blade and the small of my back, and then lower.

I bit the pillow when his tongue found me from behind, slow and thorough, and my hips pushed back against his face.
