Chapter 4: The Other Bride

Cassandra drove three blocks, parked behind a diner in Chelsea and bought Lena a coffee she did not drink.

"You should have the decaf," Cassandra said. "You look like you haven't slept."

"I'm fine."

"You're soaked, you're pale and you keep touching your coat."

Lena took her hand away from her stomach.

"What do you want?" she said.

"To meet the woman Damian married."

"He didn't marry me."

"I know." Cassandra turned her cup a quarter turn on the saucer. "I've known for three weeks that he had someone. I didn't know it was a wife until his grandfather's people started saying the word."

"You're the fiancée."

"On paper, yes. That paper I'm very sure about."

She said it without heat.

She was twenty-six, with a long face and a tired mouth, and she did not look like a woman who was winning anything.

"I don't want him," Cassandra said. "I want that on the table before you decide to throw your coffee at me."

"Why would I believe you?"

"Because I'm here. His grandfather would have my father's hands broken for this meeting."

Lena looked at her.

The diner was half full, and a waitress was refilling the sugar at the next booth.

Nobody was listening.

"Go on," Lena said.

"Stavros Karras and my father have hated each other for twenty years. Last winter they got tired of the funerals. The way to stop it was a marriage, and I was the marriage."

"You said no."

"I said no at the dinner table. The next morning my brother didn't come home from school."
