Chapter 15: The Dock
Kirsten's POV
My house in Wellfleet is a gray-shingled cottage on a tidal creek.
My father built the dock out the back the summer my mother got sick.
I had not been inside it for nine days.
The mail was piled on the mat, and the refrigerator smelled of an abandoned wedding.
Brennan stood in my kitchen with the paper bag of fried clams I had carried down the Provincetown pier, and he looked at everything.
He looked at the mismatched mugs and the cracked blue bowl by the sink.
He looked at the framed photograph of my father holding an oyster the size of a boot.
"It's small," I said.
"It's yours."
"That's not what I asked."
"It's small," he said gravely, "and I like it better than anywhere I've been in a week, and I've been to the Azores."
I laughed.
We ate the clams on the back step with our fingers while the tide came in under the dock and the light went violet.
I told him about my mother and the dock.
I told him about the summer I turned fourteen and the boom of my father's boat caught me over the eye.
He put his thumb on the scar and said, "I've been wanting to ask about this since the rehearsal dinner."
"You could have asked."
"I'd met you once. I thought it was rude."
"Ask it now," I said.
"Does it still hurt?"
"Only when I hear the word groom."
It was full dark by the time we walked out onto the dock.
There was no moon.
The sky over the marsh was thick with more stars than I had ever seen from the clinic roof.
