Chapter 19: The Flowers
On Saturday morning I was standing at my kitchen sink in Brennan's gray shirt when somebody knocked at the front door.
He had taken the seven-thirty boat out, and he had left a note on the counter that said, Home at five. Rain tonight. Slip nine.
I had read it four times.
I put down my coffee, and I went and opened the door.
Todd stood on my step with a bunch of grocery-store lilies in cellophane.
He had on the sandy quarter-zip fleece I'd bought him for his birthday, and he had shaved.
He was smiling the careful, warm smile of a man at the door of a customer who owes him money.
"Kir," he said.
I did not say anything.
"I know. I know. I wasn't sure you'd open it." He held the flowers out. "I wanted to come in person."
"Take them back."
"They're for you."
"I know who they're for. Take them back," I said.
He lowered the lilies slowly.
He looked thinner, with a yellow shadow under each eye.
I felt the old reflex in me rise and wait for him to be hurt.
