Chapter 24: No Milk
On the night I took my mate, I wore green, and I wore my own boots.
Moon Rise Lodge was lit from the roof beams to the steps.
It was the same hall, with the same two hundred wolves, and the same fire burning at the far end.
This time every one of them was smiling.
Rodrick waited by the fire in a dark coat with his shoulder healed to a pink scar.
The MacAlister pack stood behind him in a row of scrubbed faces, and the old healer had braided thyme into her hair.
The dog sat at his feet in a ribbon.
She'd been deciding for weeks, he told me, and had finally approved.
My father stood at the very back, by the doors, with his hat in his hands.
I had told him he could come, and that he could not speak, and he had agreed to both.
Junie squeezed my hand at the head of the aisle and grinned with every tooth.
"If you cry on the dress," she whispered, "I'll tell everyone about the bathhouse."
"You don't know about the bathhouse."
"The whole MacAlister pack knows about the bathhouse, Tegan. You were extremely loud."
I laughed so hard I had to hold on to her.
Then the horn sounded, one long note, and I walked down the aisle on my own two feet.
Halfway there, my mother came out of the crowd.
She wore the plum dress.
She carried a glass of milk across the whole length of the hall in both hands.
Two hundred wolves held their breath.
I stopped.
She stopped in front of me, and her hands were shaking so hard the milk trembled in the glass.
"I said I would bring it," she said, very low. "You told me I could."
"I did."
"It's only milk. I drank half the pitcher this morning to be sure." She tried to smile. "It's the one thing I could think of that you'd never forgive me for, and I wanted to give it back to you the right way."
