Chapter 14: Not Chasing

Brogan woke to a gray ceiling and a Beta who would not meet his eyes.

"How long?" he said.

"A day and a night since the field."

"Where is she?"

The Beta looked at the floor.

"Where is she?"

"Gone south. Ironwood's wards fell, and the rogues are in the villages. She took her parents and six of ours."

Brogan lay still.

The black lines had crept past his jaw in the night, and he could feel them in his teeth.

"Did she say anything?"

"She said, 'Title only.'"

"Yes," Brogan said. "She would."

He sat up, and the room tilted.

The Beta caught his shoulder and shoved him back down with a strength that would have been an insult a month ago.

"You cannot ride."

"I can ride."

"You cannot stand."

"Then I will ride sitting down."

"Brogan." The Beta's gray eyes were wet, and he looked furious about it. "She asked you nothing. She said so herself. If you go after her half dead, she will think you are chasing the cure."

"I am not chasing the cure."

"She does not know that."

"No." Brogan looked at his own hand, black to the wrist. "She does not."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Then I will not chase her," he said. "I will follow her."

"That is the same thing with a better name."

"It is not. The rogues who hit Ironwood have a leader. Our scouts say a lone Alpha who was thrown out of three packs. He calls the others to him, and he does not stop at villages."

"And you want to cut him down."

"She cannot be everywhere. She will heal until she falls over."

The Beta stared at him.

Then he sat down on the end of the bed, put his face in his hands, and said nothing for a while.

"If you die on that road," he said into his palms, "I will have to tell her."
