Chapter 24: The Mate's Pact
The blood moon rose over Blackmere on the third night, huge and red above the orchard.
The whole pack stood among the trees with lanterns, in silence, in a wide circle.
Sorcha walked into the middle of it in a white gown with her hair loose and the black cloak over her shoulders.
Her father walked on her left. Her mother walked on her right.
Neither of them said anything. Her father's jaw was tight, and her mother's eyes were wet and shining.
At the center of the circle stood a single apple tree, older than the Hall, with its blossoms spilling over the grass.
Brogan waited under it, in black, bare-handed.
The lines were gone from his throat and his arms. His eyes were clear.
He looked at her as she crossed the grass, and she watched his throat move.
The Speaker, hooded and gray, stood beside the tree with a silver cup.
"Who comes to the Mate's Pact?" the Speaker called.
"Brogan Greaves, Alpha of Blackmere," Brogan said.
"Sorcha Ashdown, of the Alliance seat."
"Under the blood moon, do you come freely?"
"Freely," they said together.
"Then give the words."
Sorcha stepped up to him.
She had thought about this for three days, and she had not decided what she would say.
Now she looked up into his face and knew.
"I claimed you at a river ford," she said. "I was angry, and I was certain. I'd say it again."
"I would let you."
"But that was a claim." She laid her hand over his heart. "The Pact is different. It goes both ways. I don't want to own you, and I don't want you to own me."
"Nor I."
"I want the bond. The real one. The one Corbin threw away because he was too frightened to know what it was."
His breath caught.
"I'm asking," she said. "Brogan Greaves. Will you be my mate?"
He took her face in both hands.
"I came down a mountain to take you," he said, very low. "I did not know I had come to be taken."
