Chapter 16: Tabitha's Second Move

The video was twenty seconds long, and I watched it standing half dressed in the pack hall with Caius's jacket over my shoulders.

It showed Orrin's sick room.

My hands lay flat on his chest, and my face was tight with effort.

Then the picture cut, and Orrin's breath rattled out of him and stopped.

The caption said: The healer was with him. Ask her what she took.

"That's from the lodge camera," Winnie said. "I put that camera in myself, last winter, for the night nurse."

"It cut two moments together," I said.

"It's got forty-one hundred views already."

I put on my shoes.

"Where is she?" I said.

"In the lot."

Tabitha was standing on the tailgate of her brother-in-law's truck, in the middle of the gravel lot, with her phone held up.

The whole pack had stopped on its way out to the cars, and she was crying.

"She came back to finish him!" she shouted. "She had her hands on him for an hour, and he's dead by sunrise!"

Heads turned toward me as I came out the door with Caius behind me and Winnie beside me.

Two hundred wolves looked from her to me.

I could see the old fear in the faces nearest, the one that makes people believe the worst of a healer when a patient dies.

"I healed Orrin," I said. "That's true. I did it twice, and the second time he was well enough to talk to the Alphas."

"And he's dead!"

"Winnie," I said.

Winnie climbed onto the bumper of the nearest truck with a tablet.

"Nobody put a camera in that room to catch a killer," she said. "It's a night nurse's camera, and it records everything, because I'm the one who set it up."

She held the tablet over her head and pressed play.
